Document chat

Document Chat lets you upload a file and ask questions of its contents. Common use cases for sellers: read a vendor contract, summarize a regulation document, search across a stack of supplier spec sheets.

In this guide:

  • Upload a document
  • Ask questions
  • Cite back to the source
  • Manage your document library

Step 1: Upload a document

Go to AI → Document chat and click Upload.

Supported formats: PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD. Max 50MB per file. Storage counts against your subscription’s storage allowance.

After upload, Hilal indexes the document (a few seconds for short docs, up to a minute for long ones). Once indexed, the document appears in the library on the left.

Step 2: Ask questions

Click the document in the library and start chatting. The assistant answers using only the document’s content, not the open internet or your seller data.

Examples:

  • “What’s the early-termination clause in this vendor contract?”
  • “Summarize the testing requirements in this regulation document.”
  • “Find every reference to ’lead time’.”

Step 3: Cite back to the source

Every answer cites the page or section it pulled from. Click a citation to jump to the exact location in the document — the document opens in a side panel with the cited passage highlighted.

Step 4: Manage your document library

The library shows every document you’ve uploaded, with date, size, and status. Bulk-select to delete documents you no longer need (frees up storage allowance).

You can also share a document with teammates — they see it in their library too. Permissions follow your role.

Troubleshooting

  • Upload failed. Check the file size (50MB max) and format. Scanned PDFs without OCR aren’t searchable; run OCR before uploading.
  • Wrong answer. Citations should help — open the citation. If the AI is misreading the document, rephrase your question or ask for a verbatim quote.
  • Storage limit reached. Delete old documents or buy the Extra storage add-on.
